About Teak
Teak is an extremely dense, fine-grained, tropical hardwood that can withstand repetitive use.
The Natural Teak Color
Teak furniture naturally has a beautiful golden/honey brown color when it is new. Over time, as natural teak is exposed to the elements, it gradually changes color from the honey color of new teak to a silver-gray patina which distinguishes finely aged, outdoor teak. Depending on the environment, natural graying and/or weathering may become noticeable after only a few weeks. In drier climates teak furniture will take several months to weather. If teak is exposed to infrequent moisture, the color will fade slowly with minor discoloration. In moist climates, where teak furniture is subjected to regular dew and sunshine, teak furniture will weather more quickly.
Untreated Teak Outdoor Furniture
If left untreated, the natural silver-gray patina deteriorates to a dark-gray and greenish look, The black spots on teak are commonly mistaken for dirt getting stuck in the wood. However, the black spots are typically caused by humidity in the wood that is developing into mold or mildew. This can be remedied with cleaning.
Textures of Teak Furniture
Although it may look rough and weathered, teak has enough natural teak oil inside to keep it protected from rot. Rough teak is a cosmetic problem and not a maintenance problem. If you prefer a completely smooth surface, hand sand your teak furniture with very fine sandpaper. Power sanding generates extra heat that can create black marks on your teak. After sanding, use a dry, rough cleaning sponge to remove any remaining sawdust.
Caring for Teak Outdoor Furniture
Teak furniture should be kept clean by scrubbing with detergent and water. The natural golden color of teak can be maintained with teak maintenance products. Some cleaners can also help keep the golden color of your furniture. Do not pressure clean teak furniture as this will extract the natural protective oils inherent in teak wood. Do not apply oil to your teak furniture as that will trap dirt and create mildew spots over time.
